Background
The King’s Health Partners Thoracic Cancer Biobank was established in 2009 at Guys hospital, with the biobank based on the 3rd Floor of Bermondsey Wing until moving to the Innovation Hub, Guy’s Cancer Centre in 2016.
The Biobank is supported by thoracic surgeon Ms Juliet King, who was key in establishing the strong relationship between thoracic surgery and the biobank, alongside implementing the routine consenting of patients. Professor James Spicer, as the long-time academic lead has been fundamental in promoting the Biobank to the research community and sourcing financial support.
More that 800 newly diagnosed lung cancer patients are referred to Guy's and St Thomas's NHS Trust each year for surgery. These patients are referred from across South East London, Kent and Sussex and represent a diverse demographic.
Applications to use samples or data from the King’s Health Partners Lung Cancer Biobank are accepted from investigators in both academic and commercial sectors.
