Julia Stevenson PhD BSc
Senior Specialist Technician
Julia graduated from the University of Dundee with a BSc in Biochemistry then after a year not far south of the Scottish border at Newcastle University (where she achieved an MSc in Medical Genetics) she returned to the University of Dundee to study for a PhD in Biochemistry. Following this she spent a year working in New York at NYU Medical School.
She then spent 15 or so years working as a Higher Scientific Officer at the Institute of Cancer Research for three teams, latterly working in a team researching causes of childhood Leukaemia with Sir Mel Greaves and more recently moving to the REPLICANT study which was trying to set up a living system to study lymph nodes from women with metastatic breast cancer.
Julia was split between the Breast Cancer Now labs at the Institute of Cancer Research & those at Guys Cancer Centre where she worked alongside the KHP Cancer Biobank. When her current role was advertised she made the switch to the Cancer Biobank starting as a research technician processing blood samples for the IRONMAN prostate cancer study and due to GSTT KHP Cancer Biobank ‘s status as the UK biorepository overseeing collection of samples from the 12 other UK sites participating in the study.
After progressing to a more senior grade boundary within the Biobank Julia is now responsible for bio-fluid processing in the bank. Recently she has attained Fellow of the IBMS status and her registered scientist or RSci accreditation.
Outside of the Biobank Julia is a taxi service for her teenage twins and attempting to create a lovely place to sit and enjoy a coffee in her garden!
